Overcast skies made the mood even more solemn as the flag was raised, and then lowered slowly to half-mast. The National Anthem was sung, and the fly-over reminded all in attendance of the air power and lives that were lost 68 years ago.
The Air Force Civilian Advisory Council (AFCAC) was proud to express our gratitude to those who protected our country and state that day, and placed a wreath among those placed by other groups, also with sorrow in their souls. But it was the lone veteran that walked up to leave a lei that really tugged on heartstrings and reminded us how vivid that day must still be for the few survivors and families.
Hickam Field lost 189 men and another 303 were wounded by an enemy that today is one of our closest allies. Time does help heal, but memories live on forever. The Air Force Band of the Pacific – Hawaii did a wonderful job with “Lest We Forget” and “God Bless America”. Flags were presented to those survivors and families present. "Taps" accompanied by a gun salute left no dry eye. A morning of remembrance, a lifetime of dedication. Thank you to all those who serve this great country of ours, and protect us from harm. God Bless America.
